Balthazar was the last of the Babylonian kings whose empire ended after he drank from a mythical sacred chalice. A fascination with ancient history and an appreciation of the deep sense of irony that befalls those who choose their drinks and drinking vessels, unwisely, prompted the name for this wine range.
The Balthazar Vineyard rises above Stonewell Road, Marananga, in the western Barossa sub-region on ironstone and clay soils. The shallow soils and moderate rainfall provide perfect conditions for premium red wine grapes, result in low yields which adds to the concentration, flavour and colour. With three blocks differentiated by soil type, depth and fertility, the combination of fruit from each allows Balthazar to create outstanding wines that continue to win awards around the world.
